With 1 in 110 children diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum (2015 ABS Statistics), this growing developmental disability impacts a vast majority of the Australian population.

At Black Belt Martial Arts we encourage children on the Autism Spectrum to do Martial Arts. BBMA is a safe space where children can learn an art form while being physically active in a structured and routine environment.

The benefits for children on the Autism Spectrum doing Martial Arts are as follows:

  • Improved confidence
  • Assertiveness
  • Self belief
  • Social Skills: including learning about personal space
  • Self defence: against bullies and strangers
  • Self control
  • Self discipline
  • Development of fine and gross motor skills
  • Leadership skills

Sensei Gabby from BBMA, Kincumber has a passion for educating and creating awareness of the benefits that children from the Autism Spectrum gain in the Martial Arts. In Sensei Gabby’s final year of her Social Work degree, she did her Honours project on How Martial Arts can Impact Children on the Autism Spectrum. By conducting extensive research, many links were found on how traditional martial arts can positively impact children on the Autism Spectrum and their families.
