Did you hit snooze again?
It's not about being a morning person it's about having a routine that sets you up for the day and eventually makes getting up easier. The difference isn't how you feel when the alarm goes off. It's what you've decided to do before that moment arrives. The way you start your morning everyday doesn't just set the tone for your day, overtime it sets the tone for yours and your families life.
Most people wake up and immediately react; phones, kids, alarms, stress. To perform at your best you need to do the opposite, as hard as that is at least the first few times, until you find a new routine and feel the difference.
Why Mornings Matter So Much
Your brain in the first hour of waking is in a highly suggestible, low-resistance state. Cortisol, your body's natural alertness hormone peaks shortly after waking. That's your biology giving you a window of clarity and focus. Most people hand that window straight to their phone. Emails, news, social media, it's the equivalent of letting someone else write the first chapter of your day.
Two Types of Mornings
1. Reactive morning: Alarm→ snooze → scroll → rush → skip breakfast → arrive stressed. The day runs you
2. Intentional morning: Alarm → rise → move → focus → fuel → begin. You run the day
The goal isn't a perfect, Instagram-worthy 5am routine. The goal is simply to own the first part of your day before anything else does.
6 Practical Black Belt Mindset Tips
1. Wake up at the same time each day
Your body runs on a circadian rhythm, an internal clock that regulates energy, focus, and hormones. When you wake up at the same time each day: cortisol (your “get up and go” hormone) spikes at the right time, energy levels stabilise and sleep quality improves.
2. No phone for the first 20 minutes
Once you turn your alarm off don't touch your phone again until at least 20 minutes after you wake up. Remember our previous BBM leave your phone out of the room to charge. Your mind is freshest before outside noise gets in. Set yourself up for the day in that window. This is a great time to set one intention for the day, something that is within your locus of control.
3. Get natural light early
Within 30–60 minutes of waking, get exposure to natural light. Even 5–10 minutes outside is enough. When light hits the retina it signals the brain to stop producing melatonin, the sleep hormone. It boosts your serotonin improving mood and focus.
4. Hydrate before caffeine
You've been asleep for hours without water. A glass before coffee wakes up your brain faster than the coffee itself and it's even better with electrolytes
5. Move your body within the first hour
It doesn't need to be a full workout. Even 5–10 minutes of movement signals to your body and mind that it's go time. Try a walk, stretching, some light kihon or shadow boxing. This improves blood flow, releases dopamine and increases motivation for the rest of the day.
6. Set yourself up the night before
How your morning goes starts the night before. Our third edition of the Black Belt Mindset has lots more on this.
Black Belt Mindset Takeaway
You don't need an hour of journaling and a cold plunge to have a great morning (although both of these are great). You just need to decide the night before that tomorrow morning belongs to you. Start with one change this week. One habit, done consistently, will do more for your family than a perfect routine done once. Strong people aren't built by alarm clocks. They're built by what they choose to do when the alarm goes off.
