I'M STRESSED OUT!!!!!

We often talk about reducing stress. But what if that’s the wrong goal? Stress isn’t something to eliminate. It’s something to understand and use. Because the truth is without stress, there is no growth.

Not All Stress Is Bad

There are two main types:

  • Positive Stress (Eustress):

This is what pushes you; grading nerves, competition, learning something new.

It sharpens focus and builds resilience.

  • Negative Stress (Distress):

This is the overwhelming kind; too much, too constant means no recovery.

The goal isn’t zero stress. The goal is the right dose, at the right time.

Why Stress Feels So Intense

Your brain hasn’t caught up with modern life. The amygdala (your threat detector) is wired for survival it was designed for “run from the lion” situations. But today?

It reacts the same way to emails, deadlines, cost of living, school or work pressure and social situations.

Your body doesn’t know the difference. So your heart rate rises, breathing changes, muscles tense. Even when there’s no real danger.

The Locus of Control Shift

One of the biggest mindset differences in handling stress is this:

  • External Locus of Control (This is happening to me)

  • Internal Locus of Control (How I respond is up to me)

You can’t control everything. But you can always control:

  • Your effort

  • Your preparation

  • Your response under pressure

6 Practical Black Belt Mindset Tips

  1. Control Your State First

Inhale 4 → Hold 7 → Exhale 8. Calm your body so you can think clearly.

  2. Focus on What’s In Front of You

Ask: “What’s the next step?” One action reduces overwhelm immediately.

  3. Be the Calm for Your Family

Kids mirror how we handle pressure. Your response becomes their blueprint.

  4. Reduce Decision Fatigue

Simplify routines like meals, schedules, daily habits. Save your energy for bigger decisions.

  5. Move Your Body

Even 5–10 minutes helps lower stress and reset your mind.

  6. Control Your Inputs

Limit negative news and constant scrolling. What you consume shapes how you feel.

Black Belt Mindset Takeaway

Stress isn’t going away anytime soon. But how you handle it, that’s what your children will remember and learn from. Strong families aren’t built in easy times. They’re built by how we respond in challenging ones.

Be Awesome
